The unique sound of
a piano is due to a blending of materials like wood,
metal, buckskin and wool. Together they create a sound
that no other instrument in the world can duplicate. A
piano will bring enjoyment to you and others around you, but
it requires periodic servicing to provide outstanding
performance year after year.
Tuning is the most
important type of general piano maintenance. It is most
important that new pianos be maintained at proper pitch
(A-440 in the U.S.) so the string tension and wooden structure can
reach a stable equilibrium
Humidity changes are
the primary reason pianos go out of tune. The soundboard
of a piano is make out of wood and will react constantly
to the weather. Unfortunately, strings
don't change pitch equally. Some strings change more than
others and leave the piano out-of-tune.
A piano should be
tuned as often as needed. If the piano is used for
concerts, long hours of playing, rough playing, it should
be tuned more often than a piano that sits in the living room
with little use. Most manufacturers recommend two tunings
the first two years and annually
after that. Minimally, a piano should be tuned once a
year.
